NEST Nature-Inspired Playground at Dover Court

Built with purpose. Crafted with soul. Designed for discovery.

NEST Discovery & Play Cove is a nature-inspired play environment spanning more than 10,000 square feet, created for children aged three to seven at Dover Court International School in Singapore.

More than a collection of playground equipment, NEST is a child-led discovery landscape shaped around the school's green campus, educational approach and the many ways young children learn through movement, exploration and imagination. The children were active participants in the creative journey, contributing ideas and helping shape the identity and name of their new play environment.

Created with children, not simply for them

Children's participation was central to the development of NEST. Their ideas, observations and imaginations helped inform the character of the environment and the experiences it would offer.

The children also took part in developing the project's identity and name. By helping to shape NEST Discovery & Play Cove, they became contributors to the story of the space rather than simply its future users.

This collaborative process gave the school community a stronger sense of ownership and helped ensure that the finished environment reflected how children see, explore and imagine their world.

A playground designed around how children learn

The brief called for an outdoor environment that would extend learning beyond the classroom, giving young children opportunities to climb, balance, experiment, imagine, collaborate and choose their own paths through play.

Instead of applying a standard catalogue solution, the project responds to the character of the existing site, including its mature trees, circulation patterns and natural setting.

The result is a connected play landscape with different routes, elevations, sensory experiences and levels of challenge, allowing children with different interests and confidence levels to engage with the space in their own way.

From educational intent to play experiences

Balance, judgement and confidence

Rope crossings, stepping routes and balancing elements invite children to assess challenges, coordinate their movements and build confidence through repeated attempts.

Movement and spatial awareness

Towers, bridges, slides, climbing elements and changes in elevation provide varied opportunities for gross-motor movement and spatial exploration.

Imagination and social play

Open-ended structures and interconnected routes can become whatever children imagine: a lookout, a journey, a meeting place or the setting for a shared adventure.

Sensory discovery

Sand and sensory areas invite experimentation, creativity and collaborative play at a different pace from the more active movement zones.

Choice and independence

Smaller and larger challenges give children the freedom to select routes that reflect their abilities, interests and confidence.

Shaped by its site

NEST was designed as a place that belongs to Dover Court's campus. The layout works with the existing landscape rather than treating it as an empty platform for equipment.

Mature trees, shaded areas, flowing paths and interconnected activity zones help create a more comfortable and nature-connected outdoor experience. The site-responsive approach supports clear movement between activities, varied levels of challenge, spaces for both active and quieter discovery, and sightlines that support supervision.

Crafted for Singapore's school environment

Creating an outdoor play environment in Singapore requires careful consideration of weather exposure, drainage, durability, maintenance, shade and intensive daily use.

Sustainable timber was selected to complement the natural character of the campus and give the playground a warm, inviting identity. Its appearance helps the structures feel connected to the surrounding trees and landscape, supporting the project's nature-inspired design language.

The material selection was considered alongside the practical requirements of an active school environment, including Singapore's climate, everyday use and long-term maintenance.

Bespoke design within a considered safety system

A bespoke playground should feel imaginative without being improvised. Equipment, routes, fall zones, surfacing, sightlines and different levels of challenge need to work together as one considered system.

For every project, the applicable equipment, installation, inspection, maintenance and surfacing requirements should be established and supported by the relevant project documentation.

Designed for discovery

NEST demonstrates what can happen when an outdoor space is treated as part of a child's learning environment.

Across the landscape, children can find opportunities to:

  • Climb and move in different ways
  • Test judgement and coordination
  • Make independent choices
  • Engage in imaginative play
  • Experiment with natural and sensory materials
  • Collaborate and build social confidence
  • Progress towards new challenges at their own pace
